I was reading the news when I spotted an article about Obama's plan to raise the federal deposit insurance from $100,000 to $250,000. What a great idea. The lack of insurance is what made the great depression as terrible as it was (banks just kept the money when they went under), and it was set at $100,000 dollars ages ago. It's about time someone suggest raising the amount. It will be a great help in saving retirements and small businesses in the current economy.

It is a good idea. There are a lot of financial limits/amounts that have been set decades ago that never seem to change. When my hubby died, I got a note from social security to pick up the check due for a funeral expense benefit (a lump sum to help pay funeral expenses). It was $240.... an amount that was set back in the 1940's I think. Not really much help at all.

Eh I dunno. On one hand yes. It would be good for businesses and retirement savings.But on the other hand, investors should take on the responsibility of diversifying their accounts. I dont really feel comfortable with the government stepping in for that much money. If people arent allowed to fail, then they arent allowed to succeed either.Its something I have to think more in depth about though.
