Check your lease for what he might be responsible for -- it should have something in there about property damage. Most standard leases disclaim responsibility and require renter's insurance though.
However, everyone knows that basements can flood in springtime, so if you wind up in claims count, I don't think they will buy the idea of you being unaware of the danger. His home insurance might cover the damage, but if it's a rental property, it likely will have a clause about damage to renter's property that specifically excludes him from responsibility.
