No I don't think they should. Everyone makes choices about what they spend their money on. Some prefer to buy the latest plasma TV rather than insure their house and its contents. So tough luck when the rains come and you lose the lot. What good is a 60" plasma TV screen then??

My heart goes out to the flood victims but honestly, not having insurance - I just can't understand that. You work hard, spend your money on nice things and then don't protect them! For some of course it is a question of money - Even ?30 per month is a struggle but for many, it's just cutting corners and thinking that it won't happen to them. Don't forget there are some people who cannot get insurance because they are in a flood prone area - the government has to take much responsibility for this - they continue to allow new homes to be built on flood planes and continue to ignore existing flood problems. So yes, in certain cases the government should help these people - they are quick to pledge money overseas so let's give our own some help.

You may find that some of these unfortunate people have been refused flood insurance due to the building of homes on flood plains, as such it is the town planner / council / government at fault therefore yes they deserve recompense, if only to discourage this bad practise of building in places the insurance industry are aware is extremely liable to flooding why are the planners unaware or not bothered?

No they shouldn't expect financial help, I pay my insurance premiums, so why should the taxes that I pay then go towards paying to help those who don't pay for insurance?

There should be some sort of charity set up so that those do goodies that think they should get aid, can pay their hard earned cash to.

I am not totally heartless by the way, I give money to charities directly from my salary and they are causes that I feel are worthwhile.

as a general rule, then no, they shouldn't. However, there are many different individual circumstances, such as families with children who are in dire need, and I have every sympathy.
If the government just dished out the cash, then the people who paid their monthly premiums end up paying twice!
Having said that, I think the govt is establishing a limited fund to be administered by local authorities that will help people, and I think that is right.
For people who can't get insurance, the government needs to underwrite some sort of scheme that people can pay into and will cover their losses to some extent in the event of flooding again.

rob, the insurance company didn't build the house on a flood plain, why force them to pay? punish the insurance company for something someone else didn't do correctly?

if you dint have the insurance you dint get your stuff insured, its as simple as that

say my neighbor and i are the same age, same income, he goes and spends all his money on crap, i buy insurance for my cars , me and the house, we both die in a house fire,
i should be covered and he shouldn't , how can you say any different,it is their choice

Bahia_smokey, i forgot the money just appears out of the air, of course it comes out of my pocket-higher taxes and higher insurance premiums to pay for this
