Default FAFSA, Taxes, and Health Insurance Dependency Issue?

I am 22 years old, but was legally emancipated through my parent's divorce decree since I was 18, working full time, and got my GED. Now I stay with my mom and step-dad and plan on going to college again this fall. I am an independent per FAFSA guidelines, although my step-dad needs to claim me as a dependent in order to keep my health insurance. Is this okay, or is there a discrepancy?

If you are considered independent according to FAFSA's dependency questions then you are independent. It doesn't matter if anyone can claim you or if anyone provides you support. All that matters are those dependency status questions.

The faffs dependency questions have nothing to do with someone claiming you on their taxes. Your step-dad can still claim you on his taxes and you can still be independent on the faffs.
