Statiscally, most homeowners have one claim every 10 years. If you're having more, you're paying more and risking losing your insurance.
In my area, I let my customers know they will lose their claim free discount after one claim. I also caution them about filing a claim under $2,500. They'll end up paying much more for it in the long run.
Insurance is designed for the big stuff. It's there to rebuild your home after a tornado, a devastating fire, a huge tree falling on it, or liability case, such as your dog mauling someones child. It's not a maintenance policy, it's not a homeowner warranty. It's for sudden and accidental loss.
I'm not sure what you're asking considering "additional coverages". If you mean raising your limits to cover your jewelry or higher dwelling limits or increased liability, yes, that's usually recommended if you have a lot to lose.
