Default Does homeowners insurance cover jewelry of any resident of the home or just family me

My boyfriend has been living with me for a year in my own house. He still has his wedding band from his first marriage. He does not want to part with it just yet (which is fine, and is not the issue here). We were told he needs to purchase insurance from a jeweler to protect his ring. Do we need to do this, or does my homeowners insurance cover it for loss/damage/theft? Does it matter that we are only engaged and not yet married and that his name is not tied to the deed/insurance/loan?

This is a question for your home insurance agent. I'm in the same exact boat as you. I'm living with my fiance and she hasn't parted with her Rx's ring yet either. I just called my insurance agent up and had her added onto my home policy as a cohabitant to cover her property as well as mine.

Otherwise she wouldn't have been covered.

Hope it helps.

You need to either add your BF to your policy (if allowed) or to have him purchase separate insurance for his ring. As well, understand that most homeowner insurance policies have limits on what they will pay for lost or stolen jewelry, unless you declare the ring as an additional item (which will cost you more in premiums). To declare such jewelry will require a certified appraisal from a certified jewelry appraiser.

Your homeowners policy only covers resident RELATIVES. He's not a relative. So it doesn't cover him, and it doesn't cover his stuff.

He should probably buy a renters insurance policy, to cover his stuff - and then he could add the wedding band to it. If you got married, THEN he's a resident relative, and his stuff is covered, and you can add coverage for the wedding band to your homeowners policy.

If you want to. Unless it's got diamonds in it, it's probably not worth insuring.
