Default Does my home insurance cover a toilet leak?

My little boy used the toilet, did his business and flushed some toilet paper down the bowl. Unfortunately, the toilet handle did not go up (it did this occasionally) and water continued to flush. Unfortunately, the bowl was blocked with waste and paper. This resulted in a leak downstairs which damaged the roof. Will this set of incidents be covered by home insurance?

Not unless you had a flood insurance rider. Basic Home Owners insurance does not cover floods.

Leaking plumbing is not considered a "flood insurance" issue. Most home insurance will cover this, but, there is always a deductible.

It will cover it but besides a deductible you may see a increase in your premium. Get some estimates to make the repairs before you call you insurance company and see if it makes sense to pay out of pocket or submit a claim. Do not call your carrier and ask for advice because that will go on file that you had and issue anyway!

Water damage is not typically included in a homeowners insurance policy, but rider policies are often included for a minor additional cost. Other damages relating to a toilet overflowing may be covered, depending on your policy and the insurance laws of your state of residence.
