Completely depends on the insurance company and their policy language. It's not the same with every company. That's a big mistake a lot of policyholders make.

You do take on the responsibility of their actions though when you allow someone to drive your vehicle regardless if they are listed or covered. In other words, if they wreck, you can be sued.

If there is a person living in your home who has a license to drive and is not listed in the car insurance policy, then it is possible that no one, not even you, is covered. There are three possibilities:

a. Some policies is valid only if every driver in the household are listed; if any driver is not listed, then no one is covered.
b. Everyone listed is covered, but everyone not listed is not covered.
c. Everyone is covered (the least likely possibility).

Most of the time, no.

There are two main ways (and hundreds of other ways) for auto insurance to work. One type of policy, ONLY covers listed drivers. The other type, you're required to list all household members, but people who do NOT live with you, or do NOT have regular access to your car, don't have to be listed to be covered.

If they live with you, they must be listed, to be covered. They don't get "free" car insurance off of you, by not being listed.

if person is not related to you, then they should have their own insurance and they need to be listed on the policy
